Why Buy Pre-Owned?


It's exciting to shop for a new vehicle and to think of how it would look, feel, and drive. But that thrill quickly ends when you notice the high sticker prices, which may make it difficult to get what you want within your budget. At Casey Volkswagen in Newport News, VA, you can still live your automotive dream if you confine your buying to pre-owned models.


Your Wallet-Friendly Alternative

JD Power estimates that you save over 30 percent when you buy a used vehicle instead of a new one. That's a lot of money left in your wallet to spend on a higher-level trim, a better model, or parts and accessories. With that lower price comes lower monthly installments, less total interest, and cheaper insurance and other fees.


The drop in price is due to depreciation: up to 20 percent when your car leaves the lot plus another 10 percent after 12 months for a total decrease of up to 30 percent in that first year. You never have to worry about your purchase being worth less than what you financed because the previous owner has already suffered the drop in value.


Another advantage is that the model and trim line you want may no longer be available. If you have your heart set on a Volkswagen Beetle, you won't find any in our new inventory. The last Beetle rolled off the production line in 2019, which means most of its examples sold out last year and are now only available pre-owned.


What about Reliability?

Your concern for reliability is wise. If something major goes wrong, the vehicle is probably beyond the manufacturer's warranty, which puts you on the hook for all repairs. You don't know how the previous owner treated the car, which may have worn out parts and hidden defects.


If you want to avoid the mystery of an unknown past and the cost of a repair out of warranty, stick to a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) model.


What are the CPO Pluses?

The CPO designation means the vehicle must first go through a 100+ point dealer inspection, which includes looking at how the engine performs when starting, trying the brakes for stopping distance and solidity, updating any required maintenance, and testing the steering for any added effort, pulling to one side, or noise.


You then get a CARFAX® Vehicle History Report, which lets you know about its previous ownership, prior accidents, type of use, and maintenance history. If we discover any issues, our brand-certified automotive techs will get them fixed, so you don't have to worry about anything not working.


A CPO vehicle increases your confidence by granting you a Comprehensive Limited Warranty that starts when the New Vehicle Warranty expires or when you make the purchase, whichever happens later.


  • Models from 2017 or older or 2020 and newer receive a 2-year or 24,000 miles warranty.


  • Models from 2018 and 2019 receive a 1-year or 12,000-mile warranty.
