All You Need to Know About the REAL ID Deadline

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card for some common day-to-day tasks. What Is REAL ID?

In 2005, Congress passed a law that standardized what states require for driver’s licenses. If your ID doesn’t have the REAL ID Compliant marking, there are circumstances in which it won’t be valid.

When Might I Need a REAL ID?

If you plan to fly within the U.S. using a state-issued ID or visit military bases, federal courthouses, or other secure government sites, you’ll need a REAL ID starting May 2025. A valid passport or military ID will still be accepted, but a REAL ID is convenient for most travelers.

When Is the Deadline?

The deadline for getting your driver’s license REAL ID-compliant is May 7, 2025. After that date, any IDs without the REAL ID badge will not be valid at airports and other federal buildings. However, this regulation does not affect other forms of ID, so if you use a US passport or passport card to identify yourself, you can still fly.

How Do I Get a REAL ID in Virginia?

You can upgrade your driver’s license at your local DMV. You can schedule your appointment and find detailed checklists at the Virginia DMV website (https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/). If you’re outside Virginia, check https://www.dhs.gov/real-id for a state-by-state guide.

What Documentation Will I Need?

To obtain a REAL ID, gather the following documents:

• Proof of identity (such as a U.S. birth certificate or passport)
• Proof of legal presence
• Two documents proving Virginia residency
• Proof of your Social Security number

Does This Rule Affect Minors?

TSA doesn’t require travelers under the age of 18 to provide separate forms of identification. That means your teen can fly without worrying about getting a REAL ID. However, when it’s time to register for their driving license, they’ll need to be REAL ID-compliant.

Can I Travel to Canada or Mexico with a REAL ID?

Your REAL ID works like a driver’s license, so it’s only valid within the United States. If you want to cross the border into Canada or Mexico, you’ll still need to bring your passport. In addition, REAL IDs are not valid for cruise ship travel.
