If you stay home through the hurricane, you must protect your garage. In addition to boarding up any exterior windows or doors, look for a secure latch on your garage door to ensure it doesn’t blow open. You’ll also want to pull your car away from the door and put a covering over it.

Preparing to Drive

Drivers looking to leave the area should plan to head out as early as possible and give themselves extra time on the road. Drive slowly and give cars in front even more of a space cushion than usual, but you can try to drive in their tracks to limit hydroplaning. Never drive through standing water; you may get caught in much deeper water than you thought or lose a tire to a hidden piece of debris.

Getting Stuck

If your car stalls in rising water, trying to restart it may only cause electrical damage. Instead, get out of the car and try to find higher ground or a shelter immediately. When you return to your vehicle later, see if the water rose above the bottom of your doors. If it hasn’t, you can safely start it, but if it has, you’ll need to tow it in for service.
