When is an Auto Lease Eligible for Cancellation?

You may be able to cancel your lease if you’re called to active duty, thanks to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), but there are some restrictions. Its provisions do not apply to your auto lease if you transfer within the Continental United States (CONUS). If you’re headed overseas or to Alaska or Hawaii for 180 days or longer, you can take advantage of the SCRA.

How Can I Cancel My Lease?

If you qualify for the SCRA, contact your finance department and find out where they want the paperwork sent. This will usually be the lessor (that is to say, whichever company is currently servicing your lease). While it’s often the dealership’s captive lender, it’ll be different if you leased through a bank or credit union. You must provide them with a written letter explaining the cause for your termination, what day the lease will end, and a copy of your military orders. This letter is boilerplate, so you can find multiple templates for one online.

Can I Cancel My Financing Plan?

Unfortunately, the SCRA only applies to leases. If you have traditional financing, you’ll need to keep up with your financing payments while you’re overseas or find a buyer for your car. You may even be able to ship your vehicle to your new duty station, which may be worth it depending on how long you’ll be stationed there.
